Did you know that the average bee can visit more than 2,000 flowers in one day? Did you know that bees and other pollinators are celebrated during National Pollinator Week which is this week, June 20-26, 2022?
In support of our local bee population, Lollypop Farm has brought in two hives of honey bees. These bees will help the 134 acres of land on Lollypop Farm, as well as the surrounding areas! We are excited to work with local beekeepers, Shad, on this important project.
Bees play a crucial role in the ecosystem. Bees are essential pollinators that help in the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants. Without bees carrying pollen between plants, plants would not be able to reproduce. These plants provide cover and food for wildlife, protecting the natural balance and helping wildlife thrive. Plants also produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, even little plants help us!
Bees also play an important part in agriculture and crop development for the foods we eat on a daily basis, as well as the crops that livestock eat. Without bees, there wouldn’t be as much food on our tables!
The Lollypop Farm bee hives will be placed by the adjacent house and creek near our main building, past the tree line behind the dog play area and cow pasture. The location is accessible should you want to visit, and marked with signage and a fence to help protect the bees and our guests.
Will the bees sting? Bees generally do not sting unless they feel threatened. This can come from someone bumping into their hive, or swinging their arms and hands around. A bee doesn’t want to risk its own life unless the hive is in danger!
How can you help? Celebrate pollinators today by planting bee-friendly plants in your yard, such as asters, goldenrods, milkweed, or lavender. Bees are often attracted to white, yellow, or blue flowers, and there are so many beautiful varieties that can keep your garden looking stunning throughout the spring, summer, and fall! Butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds also help in pollination, so you can also look up ways to attract them to your garden.
