With her adorable smile and energetic attitude, you would never know that Princess is a 14-year-old dog. Because many families tend to prefer younger pets at adoption, sweet seniors like Princess often wait longer before they find a place to call home. But Princess’ mom, Tawyna, would disagree. She is all too happy to explain how rewarding it has been to bring this happy, senior dog into her family.
Princess was 12 years old when she was brought to Lollypop Farm back in 2022. Princess had arthritis and some masses that needed removal, but she was a happy, wiggly girl with staff. Princess was treated at the Lollypop Farm Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic and became a Doggy Day Out champion while waiting for her new home.
During this time, she would go on long, slow walks and enjoy cuddle sessions with Doggy Day Out volunteers. Then, after 2 months in the shelter, she met Tawyna, and Princess found her new home.
According to Tawyna, Princess has been doing amazing at her new home for the last two years. She loves to snuggle under blankets. She also loves to play keep-away, and is very good at making sure the toy is just out of reach! Tawyna and Princess recently moved into a senior apartment complex, where Princess has blossomed into a social butterfly. Princess loves to run out of the elevator seeking attention from anyone she sees!
Senior pets can often be overlooked, with younger animals, particularly kittens and puppies adopted instead. Many adopters value a pet they can grow and be with for a long time, but here at Lollypop Farm, we know that senior pets have just as much love to give!
Princess’ mom Tawyna has a special message for anyone wondering about adopting a senior pet: “She does the happiest dance when I come home and brings me her toy! She wakes me up with kisses. She just wants to be where I am and loved, and she’s so lovable! Anyone on the fence with a senior dog, I’m telling you, you won’t be sorry! I wish she had always been mine, but we’ve got her now, and she has made my life so much more special. She is a joy!”
The Seniors-for-Seniors program at Lollypop Farm is an adoption program that helps place older pets with loving families. The program waives adoption fees for adopters aged 60 or older adopting a dog or cat 6 years or older. The adoption process is the same, where potential adopters meet with an adoption counselor to find the best fit for their family. The Seniors-for-Seniors Adoption Program is supported in part by Pets for the Elderly and The Grey Muzzle Organization.
Princess visited Lollypop Farm’s Barktober Fest this past September dressed as a ladybug. She had the biggest smiles and love for everyone around. Princess is clearly enjoying her amazing new life as much as her mom, Tawyna enjoys having her around.
